Norco scholarship for accounting students (12/09/2007)

With an Australia-wide shortage of accountants, now couldn’t be a better time for Norco Co-operative Limited to be offering an accounting scholarship to Southern Cross University students.

Norco has just announced a $5000 scholarship for a third-year accounting student. The company will award one scholarship to an outstanding current student each year from 2008 to 2010.

Norco has a $300 million turnover with diverse interests in milk collection and processing, retailing, stock feed manufacture and ice cream manufacture. The company first started in 1895 as a milk co-operative and is still a co-operative today, with ownership spread across 200 farms.

Norco’s decision to approach the University about starting an accounting scholarship was for a number of reasons, said Camille Hogan, Norco’s chief financial officer.

“Norco wants the community to be aware of its diverse business and its recent growth. We also want to give something back to the community and we are always looking for good people, so we thought this would be one way of attracting staff in country areas,” said Camille.

Selection for the scholarship will be based on an open application process advertised to second year Bachelor of Business students on all three campuses.

Applicants will be asked to address in writing the following two questions:
1. If you had $2 million to invest and wanted to start a small-to-medium sized business, what would you do with it?
2. What are your career goals?

Submissions will be received by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations and reduced to a shortlist of 10 applicants based on their creativity in responding to the questions, commercial acumen and ambition.

More information about this scholarship and an application form is available from www.scu.edu.au/scholarships, email scholarships@scu.edu.au or contact 6626 9607.
