Showcasing sustainability (08/07/2008)
Highlighting practical ways to reduce our footprint on the earth and finding solutions to the challenges ahead is the focus of the inaugural Southern Cross University Sustainable Living Expo.
Under one roof at the North Coast National in October, the Southern Cross University Sustainable Living Expo will showcase Australia’s finest thinking in carbon neutral living, renewable energy, sustainable buildings and better ways for us to manage our resources.
The Expo was officially launched in June by Lismore City Council Mayor Cr Merv King and Southern Cross University Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Clark.
“We are very pleased to be sponsoring this Expo, which demonstrates this region’s commitment to promoting sustainability at both the industry and community level,” Professor Clark said.
“Sustainability is a theme we are embedding across our teaching and research in all disciplines from business and tourism through to education and health.
“Through our School of Environmental Science and Management, Southern Cross University has a strong focus on developing innovative solutions to many of the environmental challenges facing not only the Northern NSW region, but at a national and international level.”
The Southern Cross University Sustainable Living Expo is also engaging local youth through The Schools For The Future Competition, showcasing local student-led sustainability projects.
The Competition gives 26,000 Northern Rivers DET primary and secondary students the chance to devise, deliver and showcase alternative ways of living more sustainably.
The Schools for the Future Competition encourages students to work on practical solutions to minimise our use of resources; improve our systems for recycling and deliver environmental community based projects.
The Southern Cross University Sustainable Living Expo will be a feature of the North Coast National at the Lismore Showground from October 16th to October 19th.
