Students from across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW regions donned their best school jerseys for the second annual Suit Up Careers Day at Southern Cross University.

More than 100 secondary students, their teachers and careers advisors attended Suit Up to find out more about studying for careers in business, IT, tourism and law.

Students attended interactive workshops, heard speeches from successful alumni and were able to ask questions of current student ambassadors about studying at Southern Cross University.

Fifth-year Bachelor of Business/Laws student ambassador Lisa Mizeko said the Suit Up event gets high school students thinking about their prospective career, while broadening their understanding of what courses are available to them.

“This event is really important in helping students narrow down what they want to do and listen to people who actually work in the industry,” the 23-year-old said.

“Students were able to select two discipline-specific information workshops where they heard from professionals and lecturers about working in the field and took part in interactive activities.”

Lisa was able to talk about the different components of business and law and also delved into her exchange experience, sharing stories from her six-month stint in Hong Kong and other study tours throughout her degree.

“During the Question and Answer a student specifically asked what it’s like doing a double degree and I was able to talk about studying between two different academic schools and different thinking and learning styles,” Lisa said.

“Another student was studying at TAFE and we were able to explain the best way to transition from a TAFE course and high school studies into university, and all the opportunities waiting for graduates at the other end.

“I also shared about my university exchange to Hong Kong and travel on two study tours to China and Singapore which was the most amazing educational experience while travelling, trying new food and meeting many new lifelong friends.”

Recruitment and Development Officer Simon Black said it was an ideal opportunity for high school students to come on campus to find out more about careers that interest them and experience what it’s like to be a student at Southern Cross University.

“There was wide interest in Suit Up Careers Day with students from Alstonville in Northern NSW to Upper Coomera on the Gold Coast attending the event,” Mr Black said.

Suit Up coincided with the first day of the Small Business Association of Australia hosting their 2017 Summit at Southern Cross University, next to the Gold Coast Airport, with more than 150 delegates discussing the Small Business Charter.
